The initial form developed from the attempt to capture a “life-like” gesture. The gesture of the lamp is that of a figure turning and looking.
The materials chosen for the lamp were inspired by a small reed llama I bought from a local craftsman in Bolivia, on the shore of Lake Titicaca. The locals use the reeds to build fishing boats, and the llama I bought was made using a very similar technique.
I decided that the outer structure of the lamp would be able to use the same technique. Reeds are simply bunched together in the desired thickness then tied together. The inside is made from a coarse cloth, which will diffuse the light.
The bulb is placed where the “face” would be so the light is brightest there. This will further enhance the living aspect of the lamp.
