When I first started teaching one of the subjects I taught was CAD to first years. The main aim was to get the students to learn how to create 3D models using in our case SolidWorks. I came across the Making Future Magic video by Dentsu London and Berg London and did a few experiments using my small laptop. With some success I decided to turn it into a CAD class project for the first years. The aim was to achieve animations, but our setup and probably patience was limited so we achieved many great stills. Along the way I knew this would be a great project for students as they would have a lot of fun, but I was concerned if it fitted with the aims of the subject. However a brief conversation with a colleague (the business lecturer) calmed my concerns. He simply asked “will they learn something?” to which I could easily answer “yes, a lot…” so I dove in.
The video was a quick compilation of what we achieved. In time I’d like to try it again with more detail and sophistication.
